Mattoon, IL, my home town, still has Amtrak service on the CN (formerly
the Illinois Central). But it used to have service on the IC Chicago to New
Orleans line as well as the New York Central St. Louis to New York line.
Look at these very old pictures, taken with an old box camera on heaven
knows what kind of film at heaven knows what aperature and heaven known
what speed. They are scans of old prints that were not very clear in the
first place, so sorry about the quality. I did try to spruce them up a bit,
though.
Please use the back button to return from a picture file. I'll try to put in
more links later.
The City of New Orleans and the Creole
The New York Central's trains during the NYC's last few years
Since the two lines crossed, I once got a picture of two trains at once.
During the 1960's I was in college at Ohio University at Athens, Ohio, so
I used to ride the Pennsylvania RR between Effingham, IL and Columbus,
OH sometimes. There was frequent bus service between Columbus and
Athens then.
The Penn Texas at Effingham
At Athens, there was passenger service on the Baltimore and Ohio, at
least when I first went over there. However, by the time I left in 1971,
not only were the trains gone, but so were the tracks. But here are a few
pictures from the early days.
