REMEMBEFR THE MAINE or SHOULD YOU JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS WITHOUT MUCH EVIDENCE? (Especially when the decision to go to war might be riding on the conclusion.)
There are some issues about whether the USS Maine was really sunk by a mine -- Spanish or otherwise -- in Havana Harbor in 1898. The perception that it was a Spanish mine proved to be a catalyst for war with Spain even if there were other underlying forces pushing the two nations toward war.
