On Oct. 25, 1973= , the Yom Kippur War between Israel and several Arab sta= tes had broken out along with an oil embargo by Saudi Arabia and other oil producing states.= Israel, initiall= y on the defensive, had turned the tide, invaded Syria, and surro= unded an Egyptian army.
In response to reports that the Soviet Union might send= = military forces = to aid the Arab states, President Nixon put US = forces – including nuclear forces -- on worldwide alert.
Nixon was also in the middle of his Watergate problems,= which eventually forced him to resign.  Most n= ews media reporting on the alert focused on whether it was all ju= st an attempt to divert attention from Watergate.<= /span>
